If you’ve never experienced a hammam you’ve missed out on one of life’s greatest pleasures. It has been at the centre of Moroccan life for centuries, and combines hygiene and ritual cleansing with relaxation, health and a wonderful sense of well-being. In contrast to a sauna, a hammam is based on water – and lots of it! The pleasure is as much in the ritual as it is in the wonderful ambiance of steamy relaxation.

You begin with a dousing in comfortably hot water, followed by an all-over application of savon beldi, the traditional black soap, a combination of olive and argan oils that prepares the skin for exfoliation.

After relaxing for ten minutes to let the savon beldi work its magic, you are given a gentle scrub down with a gant, an exfoliating glove that removes dead cells and gives a through cleansing. Next comes rhassoul, natural mineral clay from the edge of the Atlas Mountains. As well as having a wonderfully sensual feeling when applied, it rejuvenates tired skin and leaves it silky-soft and smooth.

And now it’s time to just relax…….
